Wires or No Wires? That is the question!

The most common question I get asked is about the difference between wired and non-wired bras and whether one is better than the other.

Wires VS Wireless

Many women come to see me and say that they’ve had bad experiences with underwired bras, and find them uncomfortable. But for most it’s, because they’re wearing the wrong size or wearing them for way too long! A properly fitted wired bra shouldn’t be poking you or digging into your flesh and the wires definitely shouldn’t be popping out of the fabric! So, with underwires, it’s even more important that you make sure you’re wearing the right size and are replacing them regularly. But at the end of the day, it really depends on your body and what feels comfortable for you.

For a long time, non-wired bras weren’t really an option for people with bigger boobs. As there just weren’t many supportive designs available (unless it was a sports bra that basically clamped your boobs to your chest but even they weren’t the best for bigger boobs). Thankfully, that’s all starting to change. There are now some really good wireless options available. And most retailers are stocking at least one or two options.

My mum and grandma’s generations have had it drilled into them that they need underwires to get proper support (unless they were pregnant or breastfeeding). So wired bras are more common which makes it easier to find more styles and options that you like in a wired bra . And yes they do offer a bit of extra support (especially for those with bigger boobs).

However, the majority of the support in any bra actually comes from making sure that the band fits correctly, not the wires. So regardless of whether you choose wired or non-wired. Making sure you’ve got the right band size, and that it’s sitting in the right place on your chest and back, is key.

Wireless

More women (especially younger women like me) are wanting more choice with bras. And are now opting for something a bit more comfortable and relaxed. This means that there are more non-wired and ‘bralet’ options. For all shapes, sizes and ages (up to about a G cup). Newer, particularly online brands are creating colourful, fun (and sexy) styles. Using fabrics and designs that give great support too. Just remember, though, that this type of bra is going to give you a different shape and silhouette under your clothing. And they’ll probably come in different sizes to the ones you’re used to, and won’t necessarily have cup sizes (so making sure the band fits correctly is key).

My Recommendations

Personally, I always recommend having a variety of bras in your drawer. Because your needs might change depending on your activity, mood, hormones or outfit. (My mum, for example, has just changed her HRT and her breasts were really sore. So I recommended a non-wired bra that lots of my Boobtique customers have loved. she’s now a convert to having more than just wired bras.)

You need at least 3-4 bras as a minimum so that you can rotate them. So that they don’t wear out too quickly. My recommendation then, would be for most people to have some of each (to have a variety).
